Granny D Birthday Celebration

Please join us in our annual celebration of Doris "Granny D" Haddock's birthday on January 24, 2021 at 2 pm via Zoom.

We have invited an impressive array of friends and family of Doris's to share their remembrances of her with attendees in this one-hour celebration of her accomplishments.

We'll have music by FolkSoul, whose members Leslie Vogel & Fred Simmons served as Granny D's "personal band" Tattoo.

Confirmed speakers:

Bill Moyers, who served as the ninth White House Press Secretary under the Johnson administration from 1965 to 1967. He also worked as a network TV news commentator for ten years.  He had this to say, in part, in the forward to her book "You're Never Too Old To Raise a Little Hell":

"The soul of a citizen shines through these pages.  Doris Haddock set out to walk across America to protest the betrayal of democracy by money in politics. That mission she accomplished; no one can doubt the source of her intense, disciplined outrage.  But understatement is the gift of this book, and there are so many interwoven stories and anecdotes about life, love and friendship, you almost forget that this is the tale of a ninety-year-old woman who walked ten miles every day for a cause she believed in.  Because she never dwells on the pain or discomfort, you sometimes fail to appreciate the wonder of what she did.  Not only did she walk with blistered feet and bruised muscles, she did so in some of the harshest environments in our land."

Former Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter, who has been a staunch supporter of campaign finance reform, has this to say: "Doris 'Granny D' Haddock set a powerful example for generations to come about passion, dedication, and the ability to make a difference."

Dennis Burke, author and friend of Granny D.  Dennis co-authored both of her books "Granny D: Walking Across America in My Ninetieth Year" and "Granny D's American Century".  Dennis spent many months traveling with her.

Dan Weeks, former Executive Director of Open Democracy, member of our Advisory Board and close personal friend of Doris.
