Among his many accomplishments, Miles served as the Secretary of State of Connecticut from 1995 to 1999, president of Demos (2001–2014), president of Common Cause (2014–2017) and is currently in his fourth year as the inaugural recipient of the Senior Practice Fellowship in American Democracy at the Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation at the Harvard Kennedy School.

Miles is currently the Executive Director of 100% Democracy, an initiative for Universal Voting, which proposes making voting a requirement for every citizen.  He is also co-author of 100% Democracy: The Case for Universal Voting
