Daring Democracy & Granny D Birthday

“Daring Democracy: Ideas for Democratic Reform”
A TED-style speaker series on strengthening democracy

Join Daring Democracy-In Action at the Nashua UU Church for an engaging, fast-paced series of short talks spotlighting bold ideas to strengthen and protect democracy in New Hampshire and beyond. Co-hosted by Open Democracy, this special gathering will also celebrate the birthday of Granny D, Open Democracy’s founder and lifelong champion for democracy.

Hear from leading advocates and organizers from around the Granite State as they share their insights, strategies, and calls to action across key democracy reform issues:

  • Ranked Choice Voting
Tiani Coleman, RCV-NH, on how ranked choice voting can create fairer, more representative elections.
  • Independent Redistricting Commissions
Liz Tentarelli, President of the League of Women Voters of New Hampshire, on fair maps and ending partisan gerrymandering.
  • Ballot Initiatives
Sarah Jane-Knoy, Granite State Organizing Project, on expanding direct democracy and giving voters a stronger voice.
  • Single-Ballot Primary
Steve Brown, NH Together, on reforming primaries to increase participation and reduce polarization.
  • Combatting Free Staters & Threats to Democracy
Zandra Rice Hawkins, Granite State Progress, on confronting organized threats and protecting democratic institutions.

The program will conclude with community, conversation, and cake as we honor Granny D’s birthday—celebrating her legacy and recommitting ourselves to the work of democracy.
