Open Democracy Book Club Consuming Government

Join us on Tuesday, December 15th at 7pm EASTERN time, as we welcome author Steven Borne, to discuss his book Consuming Government.

About Consuming Government: For most Americans, their largest annual purchase is government services. Yet we are irresponsible consumers! If we chose to invest comparable time and effort, we could reap better value at less cost year after year. Furthermore, the United States could enjoy a global economic competitive advantage once our actions led to the most cost effective and efficient government among developed nations. The keystone of this transformation rests with individual citizens and not elected officials or political parties. Our challenge is to motivate ourselves to initiate a cultural shift toward greater civic responsibility. The secret sauce is to start locally on the smallest levels of government services, then, as our management skills, tools and habits grow, expand upwards to broader layers of government services. Solutions can be driven upwards through communities versus the current stagnation from our oscillating political party control. The multitude of ideas introduced in this book can serve as a catalyst to align interests, talents and passions of our citizens for this civic culture transformation. The book’s “Flywheel” ideas may come to fruition as described, or evolve in other ways once more and more citizens contribute. What’s most important is that we all choose to actively better manage government services to ensure ever-increasing value at lower costs.

About the author:

Steven Borne’s foray into the 1999 New Hampshire primary process exposed him to the inefficiencies of the presidential campaign process as well as to the option of writing letters to the editor. His letters were not intended to complain but to offer genuine solutions to difficult problems. An aggregation of all these ideas led to his founding a fledgling independent party whose mission was to develop intelligent solutions to going problems in society as opposed to half-measures more political in nature than well-thought-out.

Unfortunately, this new party failed to land a place on the NH ballot, leading Mr. Borne to the conclusion that NH’s election laws needed to change. Ultimately this led to a deeper insight that the way to revitalize our democracy was to get US citizens to change their behavior as well. Since then, the siren song has called to the engineer in Mr. Borne to develop ideas aimed at enabling our nation to “self-correct,” that is, better manage all the government services we buy and, as well, develop practical action steps for doing so.

Steven Borne received his B.S in Mechanical Engineering, with minors in Ocean Engineering and Business from the University of New Hampshire. While working full time he graduated Beta Gamma Sigma from Northeastern University with an MBA. He has spent the past thirty years as a Controls Engineer, Project Engineer, Program Manager, Marketing and Sales for small businesses and multi-national corporations.

2019 will be his 28th year riding the Pan Mass Challenge, raising funds for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute (www.pmc.org, rider number SB0011). He has coached his sons through thirteen seasons of youth sports and graduated with the Leadership NH Class of 2017.

He currently resides with his family in Rye, New Hampshire. Consuming Government is his first book.

Covid leads to the NH Common Denominator Newsletter:
After "bird dogging" Presidential Candidates in 2019 (see candidates with the book)., Borne was presenting at Rotaries, speaking at High Schools and other NH events, but then we had Covid.  The Common Denominator Tour was intended to educate other communities about the Rye Civic League, NH Resources and to help get granite staters more active. Borne, pivoted in 2020 and created the NH Common Denominator Newsletter that provides monthly information on NH focused non-partisan groups like Open Democracy, Braver Angels, NH Ranked Choice Voting, LWV, NH Civics, NH No Labels and more.  You can sign up for the NH Common Denominator Newsletter HERE.
