Open Democracy Book Club: How Democracies Die

How Democracies Die

Zoom info is below

Since the days of ancient Athens, democracies have arisen and disappeared, often suffering violent deaths.  In How Democracies Die, Harvard professors Steven Levitsky and Daniel Ziblatt teach us that democracy no longer ends in a shower of bullets but with the slow, steady weakening of critical institutions and the erosion of long-standing political norms.  The culprits are not wild-eyed revolutionaries or foreign adversaries, they are us, or at least a sub-set of us.  They give us clear examples of how some democracies have died in the last century and invite us to consider what lessons these fates offer for our own country.  This is the way democracy ends, not with bang but a whimper.
