Open Democracy's Updated Student Voter Guidance Following October 22 Supreme Court Ruling

You may have seen a lot of different information about your ability to use student ID to prove identity when registering and when voting. Here’s the most up-to-date rundown.

What this means for you: If you are 18 years old, a U.S. citizen, and live in New Hampshire, you are eligible to vote. If you have a qualifying ID (passport, driver's license or state issued identification), bring it. If you don't, here is how to get one before election day. If you can’t get one, go anyway, bring anything that shows who you are, ask the official to verify your identity, and if you're turned away, tell us.

The legal details: A student ID is not a qualifying ID under HB 323; New Hampshire law still lets an election official verify a voter's identity by other means; the Secretary has issued guidance instructing officials not to consider student IDs in doing so; a federal court found that instruction likely unconstitutional; and the Supreme Court has allowed the Secretary's guidance to stay in effect through November 3 because of timing, without ruling on it.
