Pollworkers are essential to keeping our elections safe, secure, and accessible. Without enough pollworkers, polling places can’t open, lines get longer, and voters risk being turned away. 

Volunteering as a poll worker is a single, day-long commitment. The exact role of a poll worker varies based on each individual community’s needs, but in every community, poll workers are essential to the success of our elections.

Pollworkers help ensure:

• Every voter is greeted and checked in fairly.
• Election officials have the support they need to keep things running smoothly.
• Voters encounter a safe, welcoming, and competent polling place.

The exact role varies by the needs of your community, but generally poll workers may be asked to do any of the following:

• Greet voters as they enter the polling place
• Mark the checklist & hand out ballots
• Help voters in need at the ballot booths
• Hand out stickers
• Receive ballots at the box
• Process and/or count ballots

Additional points to emphasize:

• Pollworkers must be registered voters and be a resident of the voting district.
• Pollworker shortages nationwide threaten access to the ballot and New Hampshire must be prepared.
• Training and support are provided by clerks and moderators.
• Pollworkers are typically compensated for their service.
